Welcome to Lesson 23 of 30 Days To Your Profitable Blog challenge!

If you’re a freelancer, you should definitely have a blog. No matter what your skill or area of expertise, having a place to share your knowledge and showcase your talent is imperative. Freelance writers, illustrators, photographers, marketers, consultants, and more can benefit from blogging. Take a closer look below for some tips and ideas on what to include in your blog and inspiration for getting started.

Tip #1 Hone Your Niche and Voice

It’s a good idea to focus on your particular specialty area of freelancing on your blog. This sets you apart from others who do what you do. Take time to determine which areas of your craft are of most interest to you and might resonate well with an audience. Showcase those aspects of your work in order to increase your marketability and appeal. Likewise, your blog can be a platform to develop your own voice and brand. The more you write about your particular skill and area of interest, the more finely tuned your voice will become. Readers and potential clients will start to recognize your work.

Tip #2 Go Above and Beyond

Your blog is your online resume. It’s your chance to show what you know, to feature your talent, and to demonstrate what makes you different. When choosing topics to feature, it’s important to delve deep and look for new angles on the fundamentals of your craft. Find ways to improve upon what the competition is doing or to serve your potential clients better. Try to tie examples of your own work into these posts to show you practice what you preach.

Tip #3 Showcase Your Portfolio

Speaking of your own work, you absolutely must have a portfolio page on your blog. Choose examples of your best work in a variety of categories. Showing your work will provide you with credibility and entice potential clients or buyers. Be sure to link to your portfolio page in your about page, your side bar, your email signature, and other prominent online locations so that people can find your work.

Tip #4 Create a For Hire Page

Having a Hire Me or For Hire page is a necessary part of attracting clients. It’s here that you talk about what it is that you do, what makes you worth hiring, and why you’re a better choice than the competition. This information is your Unique Selling Point (USP); it’s what sets you apart from the rest. Be sure to include your contact information here, along with some basic information about who you are as a person.
