Welcome to Day 28 of the Crafting Your Content Marketing Strategy Challenge!

Getting media exposure is a major feat that will help you get more attention, more traffic, and ultimately will boost your authority and expertise in amazing ways. You can use content marketing to help you gain more media attention as well as ensure that the attention you get is effective for helping you grow your business.

Develop Your Startup Success Story

Your success story is always building and changing as you build your business. You can start working on your story now and keep updating it as time moves forward. Try to keep your startup story relevant to your audience. Even though it’s about you, it’s always about the audience first.

Create Your Pillar Content

Creating foundational content for your website and your business is the first step you want to take with content marketing. Your pillar content is a combination of all the content you use for your business. It’s a large piece, but it’s broken down into different aspects of the content – such as blog posts, infographics, videos, emails, social media updates, and more – all in one document.

Get Comfortable With “Newsjacking”

A great way to get attention with your content is to tie it to something that is currently in the news and newsworthy. If something is happening that is in the news that you can tie to your business, it’s a good way to get extra traffic based on search results.

Create a Downloadable Media Kit

Your media kit is an essential piece of content that you need to make available on your site. You can put it right on your site but also make it downloadable for the press. The press kit should include demographic information, your startup story, how much traffic you get, how much social media following you have, and more. Tell them how they can collaborate with you, work with you, and contact you. Include your logo, headers, and headshots that you approve for use in any stories.

Connect with Relevant Media Personalities and Journalists

The best time to connect with the media is before you need them. If you become a resource to them as a source of expert information, they’re going to come to you. Most people are busy and don’t have time to search for experts every single time. They’ll call on you more often if you answer more often. Then when you have a story to get out, they’re going to be more cooperative with you.

Go to Live Events

The more live events you go to, the more chance you will have to speak to media. Usually, the media is invited to live events. Be ready to say something nice about the event organizers and make sure you touch base with people you want to meet and follow up after.

Start Public Speaking at Events

If you speak at events, people are more likely to view you as an expert in your niche. Speakers are impressive to most people since most people claim to be so scared of public speaking that they’re more afraid of that than death. Put your speeches on your site in video and in text so that the media and your audience see samples.

Send Out Press Releases

Every time you release a new product, speak at an event, or do something newsworthy, send out a press release to the media you’ve identified that want and need the stories. There is no point in sending out a press release in a blanket way because if you don’t have a contact, most of the time they’re not going to see it. Always post your press releases on your site on your media page too.

Keep Your Content Relevant and Regular

Being ready for attention is an important component of using content to get more media attention. If the content on your site is updated, relevant, and regularly posted, the media who visit the site are going to be more likely to call on you and trust you.

Growing your business with media coverage is a great way to build your business fast. Ensure that you are truly ready for media coverage before you embark on it. You want to ensure that your site can take a lot of traffic, that it has the right content, and that everything is the way it should be so that when the media sends traffic, you’re ready.
